SOROWAKO, FOBIZ.ID – A massive fire swept through a densely populated area in Sorowako Village, Nuha District, East Luwu Regency, on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at around 2:00 p.m. local time. The blaze destroyed 46 homes and left more than 200 families homeless.
East Luwu Regent Irwan Bachri Syam, who visited the site, said firefighters battled the flames for nearly three hours before bringing the fire under control. The densely packed wooden houses and strong winds from Lake Matano caused the fire to spread rapidly, making it difficult to contain.
“The firefighting process took a long time. The crowded settlement, wooden structures, and strong winds all contributed to the rapid spread of the fire to other houses,” Irwan explained.
Displaced residents have temporarily taken refuge in relatives’ homes, mosques, churches, and even on a ferry. The local government has also established an emergency post to serve as a temporary shelter and reporting center for affected residents.
“We will also set up a central command post with a public kitchen. The government will provide three meals a day for all victims,” the Regent added.
Despite significant material losses, fortunately, no casualties were reported. The East Luwu government has pledged to continue supporting residents throughout the recovery process. (*)
